Properties of Fast Forward Shock Caused Waves in the Magnetosphere

The study of properties of propagation of interplanetary shocks into the Earth’s magnetosphere is significant to improve our understanding of the Sun-Earth system. The interplanetary shocks interact with the bow shock and cause pressure pulses on the magnetopause and its movement, launching different waves into the magnetosphere. In our study we used a set of more than 40 fast forward shocks to show some properties of their propagation. According to it, the shock speeds in the Earth’s magnetosphere are higher than in the solar wind and gradually increase from the dayside to the tail. Relations of the disturbance wave speeds in the magnetosphere on several IP shock and solar wind parameters are weak and should be further investigated. The analysis utilizes data from simultaneous observations of interplanetary shocks from available satellites in the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetosphere such as SOHO, ACE, Wind, IMP–8, Geotail, Polar, Cluster, Double Star, and GOES series.
